May 2:

Contact LaMalfa (term ends January 2019) to vote NO on HR 1628, which would make millions of people lose their healthcare.  Tell LaMalfa that budget data must be made public before a vote.  You can also tell him you support HR 676, the Expanded & Improved Medicare For All Act, which would establish single-payer financed, universal healthcare for Americans.

If you want to do more, contact our State Senator Ted Gaines to tell him to represent you by voting YES on SB 562, which would provide universal, single-payer healthcare in California.

Senator Gaines:

If you want to do more, check out Jen Hofmann's Action Checklist for Americans of Conscience.

May 3:

Support S. 928, the Therapeutic Fraud Prevention Act of 2017, which would prevent gay conversion therapy by allowing the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to classify conversion therapy and its practitioners as fraudulent. The bill declares that "Being lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or gender nonconforming is not a disorder, disease, illness, deficiency, or shortcoming."

May 4:

Demand justice for Jordan Edwards. #JusticeForJordan

Also please make one last call to Rep LaMalfa at 202-225-3076 to vote NO on the new healthcare bill because we don't know what it will cost, congresspeople have exempted themselves, and it will harm millions of Americans who will be classed with pre-existing conditions.

May 5:

Call LaMalfa at 202-225-3076 and let his staff know how you feel about his vote for the AHCA.

May 6:

Locally, KVMR and the Nevada County Historical Society participated in yesterday's #BigDayofGiving and you can still donate to either:

Lastly, you can donate to an escrow fund to oust the 24 Republicans from districts where Trump won less than 50% who voted for the AHCA.  More info.

May 07:

Contact our Assemblymember Dahle (term ends December 2018) to vote YES on SB 536, to grant researchers access to needed data for the California Firearm Violence Research Center. Thank him for voting YES on AB 785 (which will prohibit people convicted of a hate crime from purchasing or possessing a firearm for ten years). Tell him you support gun safety legislation.

Mat 10:

Contact our federal Reps to say you question the President's motives for firing FBI Director Comey, and that you want them to demand the Deputy Attorney General appoint a special prosecutor to take over the investigation into the President and Russia. (Call script)

Tell LaMalfa you want him to cosponsor and vote YES on H.R. 356, which would set up a 12-member commission that would be tasked with investigating foreign interference in the 2016 presidential election.  Tell LaMalfa you want him to pass H.Res. 186, which would provide the House with the president's tax returns.  Russian interference must be exposed.

You can contact all three representatives at once by texting the word resist to 50409.  This issue is urgent so postal mail will be less effective, but ever contact counts.

May 12:

Support AB 14, the California DISCLOSE Act, which would force political ads to clearly say who pays for them.

May 13:

The current president has promised he will gut financial and banking regulations, and he made progress this week when he sneakily made Keith Noreika head of the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency.  Noreika avoided a Senate confirmation by being made “first deputy” before the head was fired and then promoted into the position.  His conflicts of interest weren't disclosed and he doesn’t need to sign an ethics pledge for over 130 days.  Contact our representatives to say you are counting on them to maintain the integrity of the current banking and financial protections.

May 14:

Happy Mother's Day. This past week, Black Lives Matter organizations fundraised to bail out as many mothers as possible who would otherwise spend Mother’s Day in jail simply because they could not afford bail.  Donations received now "will be used to support the ongoing efforts of the National Mama's Bail Out Day campaign and participating grassroots organizations."

Please leave a public comment to protect our national monuments.  The comment period is only open from May 12-26.  You can submit your comment(s) anonymously.  You can attach files including photos to your comment(s).

Sample comment:
"Any attempt to reverse or diminish a monument designation by the president or the executive branch is unlawful under the Antiquities Act.  Only Congress has the authority to modify a national monument.

No drilling or mining can be allowed without complete environmental impact studies.  These studies will show the devastating effects of modifying the protections our monuments currently have.

Diminishing any national monument would be financially detrimental because it would dramatically decrease local revenue from tourists, campers, outdoorspeople, sportspeople, wildlife photographers, nature photographers, researchers, etc."

May 15;

Issues are tallied by LaMalfa's office weekly, so even if it seems repetitive, we need to register our thoughts on the disastrous Healthcare bill and the Russian influence scandal for this week. Contact LaMalfa to tell him 4 things:

  • You DISAPPROVE of him voting yes on the AHCA.
  • You want him to SUPPORT H.R. 356, which would set up a 12-member commission that would be tasked with investigating foreign interference in the 2016 presidential election.
  • You want him to PASS H.Res. 186, which would provide the House with the president's tax returns.
  • You want him to DEMAND the Deputy Attorney General appoint a special prosecutor to take over the investigation into the President and Russia.

Call. Send a postcard. Send a letter. Send these as 4 separate e-mails, faxes, or ResistBot messages (text the word "resist" to start a new message when one is finished). It all counts!

Contact info and info on tomorrow's votes.

May 16:

Contact LaMalfa to OPPOSE H.R. 10, the "Financial CHOICE Act", which would deregulate Wall Street.  Tell him H.R. 10 would make it easier for banks and lenders to rip people off, and would increase the risk of another financial crisis.  Indivisible has a call script for opposing H.R. 10.

Help generate an accurate count for this action by letting us know how you contacted LaMalfa.

Longer explanation: The Dodd-Frank Act is a financial reform law passed in 2010 as a response to the Great Recession triggered by the 2008 financial crisis.  It includes regulations intended to prevent “too-big-to-fail” banks from causing another economic crisis, such as the Volcker rule, which prohibits banks from making the kinds of speculative investments that led to the housing market crash in 2008.  The Volcker rule also limits banks in their relationships with hedge funds and private equity funds.  Dodd-Frank also created the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), which ensures that banks, lenders, credit card corporations, and other financial companies treat their customers fairly and protect consumers from practices like predatory payday lending.  H.R. 10 would repeal the Volcker rule and strip the CFPB of key enforcement powers, including the ability to fine institutions for unfair lending practices.

May 17

Contact both LaMalfa and Harris to SUPPORT the "Restricting First Use of Nuclear Weapons Act", which would prevent the president from conducting the first strike with a nuclear weapon unless Congress had declared war and authorized said strike.

May 18:

Contact our State Senator Ted Gaines to represent you by SUPPORTING SB 709, which would require companies that transport oil in California waters to have an emergency plan to clean up tar sands oil spills.  The bill is set for a hearing on May 22.

Also, if you haven't yet, please leave your comment to protect our national monuments.

May 19:

The House has already passed H.R. 5, the Regulatory Accountability Act (RAA), with LaMalfa voting YES.  Contact our Senators to vote NO on H.R. 5 and NO on S. 951, which are both the RAA.  Some say the RAA is more accurately described as the Risk to Americans Act because it would undermine our protections by paralyzing the regulatory process, halting protections for clean air and water, safe workplaces, financial protection, etc.  Please ask our senators to OPPOSE H.R. 5 and S. 951 and then send this to at least one friend in another State and urge them to ask their senators to oppose the RAA.

May20:

Secretary of Health and Human Services Tom Price had misrepresented opioid addiction treatment. An impressive 700 researchers and practitioners sent him a letter to set the record straight.  Send him a postcard letting him know the importance of medication-assisted treatment as drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental death in the US. If you're willing, please leave a comment with what you wrote to help people who are looking for ideas.  U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, 200 Independence Avenue, SW, Washington, DC 20201

May 21:

We've previously contacted our Rep LaMalfa to SUPPORT H.R. 356 (the Protecting Our Democracy Now Act), which would set up a 12-member commission tasked with investigating foreign interference in the 2016 presidential election.  H.R. 356 is stuck in committee and needs 218 signatures on a discharge petition to move the bill out of committee.  The petition currently has 191 signatures.  Contact LaMalfa and urge him to sign the discharge petition for H.R. 356. Tell him to represent all his constituents and put country over party.

Call Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly at 202-282-8495 to OPPOSE hiring David Clarke, who is up for a senior position at the Department.  Clarke is unfit for the Homeland Security job because he has repeatedly been accused of criminal wrongdoing over human rights abuses and deaths in his jail, and he calls Black Lives Matter activists terrorists instead of recognizing their concerns and working to address them.  Clarke was also accused of plagiarism this month.

May 27:

Tell our Members of Congress we want a clean debt ceiling hike that does not cut programs that help disadvantaged Americans.

May 28:

  1. Reach out to every 16- and 17-year-old you know in the state and make sure they are pre-registered to vote.
  2. RSVP for our June 11 meeting.
  3. Sign the Resolution to Repeal, Replace and Reframe the 4th Grade Mission Project.  Most California students create a mission model in elementary school. "The practice of creating models of the California missions and not including the impact and daily life of the native population within these missions has perpetuated a false narrative." Join the effort to move this curriculum to one centered on Native Americans.
  4. Help California's 50th District vote Hunter out.  Rep. Duncan Hunter (a Republican representing California's 50th District) said Friday that the Montana congressional candidate's attack on a reporter was "not appropriate behavior, unless the reporter deserved it."  Hunter was already under criminal investigation for ethics violations!  Also help our district vote LaMalfa out.
